Batchelors and Masters in Islamic Studies including History, where she was appointed Student Vice President
Married in 1966 & moved to the UK in 1966 Husband worked for the Civil Service for 33 years at New Scotland Yard. Recognised and awarded an invitation, with wife, to Buckingham Palace to meet Queen Elisabeth II & Prince Phillip, for contributions and exceptional services to the Civil Service.
Mother of three, two boys and one girl.
All the children are professionals within their fields, Accountancy, Law and IT.
First job as a Bought Ledger Clerk before the birth of the third child. When she was ready to go back into the workplace, she wanted to take advantage of her education and skillset, but to have a sense of contribution and purpose.
To promote and empower the next generation of Muslim women to strive for excellence and parity within the workplace, community, government and wherever their heart so desires.
She found this in volunteering within the local community for a local organisation.
Hackney Muslim Council (An Organisation for Men) – she conducted translation work, managed after school playschemes and activities and held language classes.
Then through Hackney Community College, her contributions were recognised and was appointed to teach language classes at Skinners School for girls in Hackney.
From her volunteering and experiences, she realised there was a significant shortfall in support, education, public services and opportunities for Muslim Women and Girls in Hackney and through her persistence, Hackney Muslim Women’s Council was born, in 1983.
Amna Khan is currently the Chairperson and Founding Member of HMWC.
She has been passionately been volunteering to the community for over 40 years.
